Transylvania Flash Floods Defanged – NoFloods Spring Demo Tour In Romania
In June 2018, Romania was hit by heavy rains which increased the water levels in rivers and lakes, thus creating floods in most areas within the country.
One of the cities where flooding was highly devastating was Bacău.
There, water levels were high and it even exceeded 3 meters in some areas.
This was an extreme case isolated to specific areas, whereas in most common floods, water does not reach these high levels.
That is why our barriers of up to 1.5 meters are often more than enough to avoid major damages.
We therefore decided to kick off our Romania demo tour in the city of Bacău during this spring season.

In a flood situation like the one in Bacău, it is difficult to imagine the number of sandbags and man-hours required to protect an entire city.
But with our Watertubes, we can easily deploy 1 km of barriers in 4-6 hours using only 4 trained people.
Our Second Stop: Sibiu
Up next was Sibiu, a city in Transylvania, central Romania. Here, River Cibin creates issues in the industrial area of the city and endangers companies located near the river.
With the help of representatives from Sibiu Municipality, we held a live demonstration on 1st of April 2019 near the river Cibin for delegates from different municipalities in the region as well as regional Emergency Situations Inspectorate (ISU Sibiu) and Water boards.

Our Third Stop: Bucharest
We had a demonstration with IGSU (National Emergency Situations Inspectorate) and ISU Ilfov in Bucharest on the 3rd of April and held discussions about the different regions in Romania that face flooding on a regular basis.
The demonstration took place at their local training center where we used water from Lake Pantelimon to fill up the Water Tubes.
National-level institutions can always support different regions by placing ready-to-deploy containers (like the one in the gallery below) in vulnerable areas or in strategic regions from where they can be easily accessed.

Our Fourth And Final Stop: Brasov
We concluded our Romanian tour in Brasov; a region that has several small creeks and rivers that often endanger smaller villages.
Here we met representatives from several institutions who collaborate together during emergency cases.

Key Takeaways from Our Romania Demo Tour
Since Romania is covered by mountains in its central part and hills in most parts of the country, the concerns we heard in all our demonstrations from attendees were similar, especially in terms of flash flooding and impact with heavy objects carried by water (e.g. trees and stones).
In such cases, our barriers can be used to redirect the water to areas where the potential damages are minimal.
By placing the barriers in strategic locations where the water has not yet gained strength and speed, we can help create a best-case scenario.
When discussing potential impact with heavy objects, we always like to emphasize the tear-resistant structure of our barriers and underline that in case small damages do occur, the NoFloods Barriers material prevents the damages from expanding, and thus the shape of the barrier will stay intact.

We ask you to keep in mind that in live flooding situations, we have successful results supporting larger damaged sections with spare watertubes and other equipment, or just replacing those sections.
Overall, we met great people in Romania, professionals in their fields who raised several challenging discussions and shared their stories from previous flood situations, especially underlining how critical time is in such cases.
This is why we know our barriers can be a great asset compared to the time-consuming practice of using sandbags or devices designed for short-distance small-scale flooding.
