FIRST NOFLOODS BARRIERS TRAINING IN GERMANY – KARLSRUHE NOW READY TO DEPLOY!

With over 2.000 inhabitants per km², the Rhine valley is one of the most densely populated areas in Germany and thus highly susceptible to flooding, especially in cities.

In November 2018, Environment Solutions accomplished a dense 3-day training for emergency flood protection, educating more than 30 specialists from the Civil Engineering Department of the City of Karlsruhe, Germany, to successfully protect the city’s critical infrastructure from severe flooding and its harmful consequences.

The city had decided on a configuration of four NoFloods Twin and Triple 125 Pro as well as eight Basic Barriers of a total length of about 1km, as the most effective solution to secure its inhabitants and industrial area from potential dyke break along the river Rhine that could affect Western Karlsruhe.

The city itself is the second-largest in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg in terms of population and represents an important location with its two Rhine harbours and the second-largest oil refinery in Germany.

Karlsruhe is in addition one of the most important European locations for information and communication technology. Also, the headquarters of EnBW, one of Germany’s biggest electric utility companies is located in the city.

The training consisted of a theoretical part, where the participants learned the essentials of flood protection as well as the technical specifications of the NoFloods Barriers.

The other two days, participants were trained to practically deploy the NoFloods Barriers successfully in case of an emergency. The practical training was carried out on the grounds of the municipal water treatment plant in Karlsruhe.
