Inflatable Barriers Ease Dock and Lock Gate Repairs
In the Maas River, there is a lock from the sea where ships are lifted from approximately 56 to 488 NAP (Normaal Amsterdams Peil).
The lock has two gates; an old one with lifting doors and a modern one with point doors.
There were issues with the pivots and the neck-pins were damaged, so the authorities (i.e. the Government and RWS) decided to remove the doors and take them for repairs at a construction yard in Gorinchem (it’s at the centre of Holland)
This now left the pivots needing to be changed.
The Challenge: Changing Pivots In the Water
At first they decided to use seal bulkheads and pump the lock heads dry but it didn’t work.
There was leakage and small young fish blocked the inlets of the suction pumps.
This made it hard to pump water from the places where the pivots had to be changed, making it impossible to dry the working area.
The Solution: Use of the Nofloods Pro 60 Barrier to Create a Cofferdam
Our Dutch partner advised the client to place our NoFloods barriers at the corners of the lock heads to create a small cofferdam (dry work area) and enable the replacement of the pivots.
The client agreed and after consultation with our head office in Denmark, they used the NoFloods Pro 60 barrier.
The Result
The barrier proved to be fast and practical – they were quickly able to keep the corners dry.
In the next 4 years, the government will repair several locks that are overdue for maintenance and they will use our NoFloods barrier which has already proven to be a great solution.
Watch the video below to see how they were easily able to use our barrier to create dry work areas at the corners of the lock heads, thus aiding the replacement of the pivots.
