How an Inflatable Cofferdam Simplifies Excavation
Definition: An inflatable cofferdam is a temporary barrier designed to control or divert water, creating a dry area for construction or repair work.
It’s commonly used in projects near or within bodies of water such as rivers, lakes or coastal regions.
In early 2018, the NoFloods inflatable cofferdam was deployed to create a dry work area along the coastline of Taarbæk, Denmark.
Despite freezing temperatures, chilly winds and near-freezing sea conditions, the system proved its reliability as a temporary cofferdam for a challenging shoreline excavation project.
Project Overview: Inflatable Cofferdam Use in Taarbæk, Denmark
The project was carried out for and in cooperation with Barslund A/S, a leading Danish contracting company with over 35 years of expertise in construction and supply services.
The excavation was required to repair an underground pipeline near the shoreline.
Without effective water control, the sea’s proximity would have caused flooding in the work area, making the excavation impossible.
To address this, the NoFloods inflatable cofferdam was selected as the ideal solution for forming a temporary barrier against seawater, ensuring a dry and safe work environment.

Why Choose the NoFloods Inflatable Water Cofferdam?
The NoFloods inflatable water cofferdam offers a range of benefits that make it a superior choice for water control in construction and flood protection projects.
1. Rapid Deployment
One of the standout features of the NoFloods system is its quick and efficient deployment. This speed is crucial during emergencies or when time-sensitive construction tasks are at hand.
2. Adaptability to Various Terrains
The NoFloods cofferdam is designed to conform to different ground surfaces be it rocky, sandy or uneven terrain.
This flexibility ensures a secure seal and effective water blockage, regardless of the site’s topography.
3. Environmental Friendliness
Unlike traditional methods that rely on sandbags or heavy machinery, the NoFloods system uses water to inflate the cofferdam, thus minimizing environmental impact.
This approach reduces the carbon footprint and eliminates the need for disposing of contaminated materials post-use.
4. Cost-Effectiveness
The reusability of the cofferdam translates to long-term cost savings.
After use, the barrier can be deflated, cleaned and stored for future deployments, reducing the need for constant replacements and lowering overall project costs.
5. Minimal Disruption
The lightweight and portable nature of the NoFloods temporary cofferdam means it can be transported and set up with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment and ongoing operations.
This feature is particularly beneficial in urban areas or sensitive ecological zones.
6. In addition to the above, the NoFloods system utilizes two key components:
a. NoFloods TripleTube 125 PRO with Membrane: This robust cofferdam serves as the primary barrier, holding back the water effectively.
b. NoFloods FlexWall: Positioned inside the temporary cofferdam as a secondary defense line, the FlexWall adds an extra layer of security.
Historic Construction Area: “Bomb-ground”
Adding to the significance of the project, the construction site in Taarbæk has a unique history.
Known as “Bomb-ground,” the area was targeted by German troops during World War II, who suspected it to be a Danish Freedom Fighters’ base.
This historical context underscores the importance of preserving the site while conducting essential infrastructure repairs.
The Versatility of NoFloods Inflatable Cofferdam
The deployment of the NoFloods inflatable water cofferdam in Taarbæk is a prime example of how innovative flood control solutions can overcome environmental and logistical challenges.
With its quick setup, efficiency and environmentally friendly design, the NoFloods system remains a reliable choice for creating dry work areas in coastal and flood-prone locations.
